Andy Fleming

Owner, Systems Engineer, Repairs Specialist

Andrew Fleming

Born and raised in Blackburn, Lancashire in the UK, Andy began programming in Basic on his Amstrad 64K home computer complete with green screen monitor at a very young age and progressed on to writing computer games and experimenting with electronics in a hobbyist capacity. After graduating high school at 16, he took an apprenticeship in electronics, where he trained extensively in all areas of engineering including milling, turning, fitting, sheet metal working, welding, cutting, hydraulics, pneumatics, technical drawing, computer-aided design, and electrical installation, before concentrating on electronics for the remainder of the year, attending college one day a week to study electronics theory.

When his sponsor company Unilab relocated production to India, he immediately was hired by Northern Industrial Electronics where he completed his apprenticeship and continued his studies part time for 8 years to attain a Bachelor’s Degree with Distinction in Electronic and Electrical Engineering from Lancaster University. Appointed Works Manager while still studying at the age of 22, he implemented many initiatives to increase productivity and reduce warranty rates, including the design of a database system to replace the previous paper-based systems and the implementation of a company-wide network which incorporated the world’s first installation of Microsoft Small Business Server 2000 as a case study for Microsoft. After deciding to emigrate from the UK, Andy worked for two North Carolina companies carrying out repairs and systems integration, before founding AFI Systems in early 2008. In his spare time Andy likes to design crazy inventions and spend time with his wife and son.

Jay Brooks

Service Manager, Servomotor Repair Specialist, Field Service Engineer

Jay Brooks

Jay hails from the Burlington, North Carolina area, and after graduating high school decided to join the Coast Guard. Fortunately for us, the Coast Guard recruiting office was closed for lunch, and the USMC office next door enticed him to sign up for the Marines. Although he originally planned to be a diesel mechanic due to his excellent mechanical ability, after his aptitude test score was reviewed he was told that he should definitely be working in electronics.

Jay spent 10 years with the US Marine Corps servicing state-of-the-art radar and communications equipment and training junior ranks, leaving with an honorable discharge as Staff Sergeant. He then worked for several industrial electronic repair companies in North Carolina and spent several years self-employed, before joining AFI in November 2009. Jay performs component-level electronic repairs on the bench, as well as servomotor repairs and field service. He has performed many upgrades of outdated servo systems and is a great resource in this area. In his spare time, Jay enjoys horseback riding with his wife and friends, and looks after their growing collection of farm animals on Sunset Acres.

Tonia Yarab

Senior Electronic Technician

Tonia

Tonia learned how to work quickly, efficiently, and accurately under pressure from her previous experience serving and bartending, and of course from being a mother. After completing an electronics degree from York Tech, she worked as a repair technician at Circuit City before moving on to an industrial electronics repair facility. We are thankful that Tonia joined AFI in 2010 and has been a key member of staff ever since.

Tonia has attended training for WEG and Baldor motor and drive applications and troubleshooting and is proficient in troubleshooting and repairing problems on circuit boards including replacing even the most fine pitch surface mount components. Tonia spends her spare time taking care of her children and playing pool in the APA pool league, where her all-female team “Don’t need a man” recently went all the way to Vegas and won the national title!

Steve Mealy

Senior Engineer

Picture of Steve Mealy

Steve is a Charlotte, NC native. He received a degree in Electronics Engineering Technology from Central Piedmont Community College in 1991. Steve started his career in field service with an international machine tool company at its US headquarters in Charlotte. With an emphasis on solving problems over the phone and on site, Steve was able to quickly sharpen his troubleshooting skills. Steve later moved on to controls design with an automation company. This experience allowed Steve to master many aspects of controls design including power distribution, PLCs, panel layout with AutoCAD, and sensor selection. Before joining AFi, Steve was a key member of a development team at an industrial gas detection company with responsibilities ranging from embedded firmware/electrical design to performance/reliability testing. During off hours, Steve enjoys playing guitar, hiking and experimenting with embedded electronics development boards. .
